Today’s story is a bit of a grim one for me, but this is what came to mind looking at the lockers in the photo featured for the Friday Fictioneers challenge. Thanks go out to Rochelle for hosting and to Claire Fuller for the photo.

In the locker room, hanging behind the door of locker #6273, was the assault rifle. It was the only one that Johnny Dingo left behind. It was there just in case he needed it.

Wrapped up in loose fitting sweats, he made his way through the crowd at the track meet. Heading towards where the announcer stood, calling the runners for the next race, Johnny slowed as he approached.

Did he really want to do this? Yes. They needed a lesson. No more bullying. Those kids who teased him incessantly for the last 10 years would tease no more.

Today, the start of a work week, is the day that I devote to hosting the Mondays Finish the Story challenge. In the challenge, I ask that you write a story using between 100-150 words and that you use the opening line and the photo prompt to create your story. The opening line of the challenge is in bold and italics. Here is my story.

The family had no idea that little Luigi would grow up to be not only a well known cheese artisan, but also shortest mob boss on record. For years, the kids teased him calling “Gamberetto.”

From outward appearances, Luigi was just a regular guy who had a passion for making string cheese. He had a store on Fordham Road in New York. Cheeses hung from hooks in the window, and the smell of the cheese shop drew people in by droves. Samples were always available to anyone who wandered in.

Where the operations took place was, of course, in the back. Hidden underneath one of the workbenches, if you stepped on a particular brick on the floor of the cheese making area, a door swung open revealing a huge office. This is where Luigi’s conducted the family business. Little did anyone know that the Luigi the Gamberetto, or shrimp, was also the big cheese.

It has been a while since I have written for the Sunday Photo Fiction, and I am ready to start getting back into the swing of things. Here is the photo prompt for this week and my story entitled “Time.”

As soon as he finished whispering into the watch, he looked up and noticed that the world shifted. The air in the park smelled fresher, and the walkways were free of litter. No sounds of the 21st century existed here. Women adorned in long Victorian dress held onto the arms of men properly attired in suits. They strolled arm in arm. Jeremy looked down at what he was wearing and was happy to discover that he blended in.

He was giddy with joy because his invention worked. He did need to keep it concealed because no one in the 1870’s wore anything of its kind. With the camera hidden in the upper pocket of his waistcoat and the wire hanging down to his side, he snapped off photos.

Jeremy noticed a younger man watching him. Turning quickly he walked the other way and looking back he realized that the man was following him. He ducked into a courtyard of one of the many buildings and hid. Taking a deep breath, he pulled up the sleeve on the jacket and began whispering into the watch.

It was then the man grabbed his wrist.  And, they both fell into the future.

Hello my dear readers. I have been absent for far too long and have missed posting to this blog. Illness crept around the corner, grabbed my by the lungs, squeezed me, and landed me in the hospital, where I still am today. I managed to contract an odd variety of pneumonia. Never had this before and do not ever want to have this again either. Today, I am actually feeling a lot better and felt like creating a post.

The challenge for today’s WordPress Photo Challenge, Cheri has chosen the topic “Today was a good day.” Because I am stuck indoors, with a tiny window allowing me to see the tops of pine trees, I decided that I would share some favorite photos with you of what I would much rather be seeing. This will make my day a good day.

Few knew about the mutation of moths. These unassuming insects had turned carnivore. I discovered this the other night at home.

I was sitting outside eating my burger. I needed more mustard. I separated the bun from the burg then went to get it. When I came back, moths covered my food. They appeared to be tearing at the meat. I watched for a bit and then waved them off. Reluctantly they left.

Three days later, after work I went back to Mickey D’s to grab a bite. Who do you think I found at the drive up window?

It was a quiet night for Jenny. The kids were sleeping. Her husband had gone out with friends. She sipped on tea as she read. Suddenly, she heard a strange sound and saw a light flashing in her backyard.

Heading outside, the sound stopped, and the only light was the moon behind the clouds. Still looking up, she saw that the moon had moved its position quickly. “That’s not normal,” she thought.

Three hours later, she found herself standing in the backyard. Police, family and friends were in the yard. They had been looking for her. She was missing time.

Our crepe myrtle trees are in full bloom. The flowers on the pink tree are more abundant than on the magenta tree. In the mornings as we sit outside enjoying a cup of coffee, we hear the hum of the bees. It sounds just like we are sitting inside a hive. Bees are a hard subject to shoot photos of because they are very swift, but I did manage to get a number of photos that I want to share with you today.

Welcome back to my kitchen for Tasty Tuesday! Today I will be featuring pork ribs. I was actually going to make these ribs Chinese style, but discovered I did not have the hoisin sauce to do so.

So, I took a gander at One Man’s Meat,, an award winning food blog written by Conor Bofin. I have tried numerous recipes from his site and my husband and I have enjoyed each and every one of them. I suggest you check out his site! I had to make a change on the peppers used in this recipe because I did not have the same ones that Conor used.

4 whole dried pasilla ancho chiles
2 whole dried guajillo chiles, Conor used New Mexico chiles
3/4 cup of local honey
1 1/2 tsp of fennel seed, Conor’s recipe calls for 1-2 tsp

My preparation is a bit different. First, get a soup kettle of water on the stove and set to boil. Trim the ribs to individual ribs. As the water gets hot in the pot, take out a little over one cup of the hot water. Put this in a bowl along with the dried chiles.

When the water boils, add the ribs and cook for 15 minutes. At this point, I heated up a small saute pan, and added the fennel seeds.

I kept moving the fennel around in the pan. When you see the color change from green to a lovely shade of brown they are done.

Remove them from the heat and add them to your mortar. Using the pestle, crush them to a fine powder.

Get out your blender and add the crushed fennel. The chiles should be soft enough now that you can pop the stems off, and then gently tearing down the side of the chile, open up the chile and remove the seeds. Add the chile pieces to your blender, and also add the water that you soaked the chiles in. Add your honey and blend to make a smooth paste. I forgot to take a blender photo!

The ribs should be done. Remove them from the hot water and place them in a glass dish for marinating.

Pour the paste over the ribs. I stirred this up with my hands to make sure that they are evenly coated.

Then I tossed them into the refrigerator for a few hours, turning them occasionally.

Conor prepares these ribs on a gas grill, lowest heat, for about 20 minutes.

With the near 100 degree temperatures we have been having here, I decided to do the remainder of the cooking by slow roasting the ribs. I did this in a 175 degree oven for about 2 hours. Line a baking pan with foil. Add about one inch of water to the pan. Lay a rack over the pan and lay the ribs on the rack.

The leftover marinade, I tucked away in the refrigerator and before the ribs were just about ready, I heated up the sauce to a boil, let it thicken, and then served this as a sauce for dipping of the delicious ribs.

And, here are the ribs right out of the oven. Don’t they look amazing?

The ribs are tender, juicy, and the flavor is subtle and slightly smoky. The sauce is a lovely compliment.

“The team employed the use of Nightshade to get the information they wanted from their captive.” He was the last of the Knights Templar. They wanted him to reveal the location of the Arc of the Covenant.

Many believed that the Arc is located inside the money pit on Oak Island. The team was unsuccessful at finding it there.

They held the prisoner’s nose closed and put the cup to his lips. He had no choice but to open his mouth if he wanted to breathe. Some of the liquid dripped into his mouth. After a half hour, they could see the drug was taking effect.

His pupils dilated, his speech a bit slurred. They began questioning the knight who responded with one word. “Frog!”

The team looked puzzled. What did a frog have to do with the arc? They poked at the knight and asked again for the location of the arc on Oak Island.

“Wrong,” said the knight, “Frog Island.”

New excavations began immediately.
