I remember when. Do you? Here is a list of some of the things that I remember:
I remember when:
** You could go see a double feature on a Saturday for 50 cents.
** Brill Cream for men was the styling gel of choice for men, and Aqua Net was the hairspray women used.
** Telephone numbers went through an operator.
** The telephone numbers began with a name: You would say to the operator “I would like Baxter 34567.”
** Milk came in bottles and a milk man delivered them to your house.
** A first class stamp was 5 cents.
** Kids could play outside in the streets by their house until 9:00 at night without fear of being kidnapped.
** Kids were skinny.
** Television stations, and there were only three, signed off at 10:00 at night and did not come back on until 10:00 in the morning.
** There was candy for a penny.
** Laugh-In starring Dan Rowen, Dick Martin, Goldie Hawn, Judy Carnes, Ruth Buzzy and Arte Johnson.
** The Mama’s and the Papa’s. I loved Mama Cass singing “Dream a Little Dream for Me.”
** The Beetles movies.
** We would watch planes try to land at San Francisco International Airport and misjudge the runway, and have to circle to try it again.
** Bridge tolls for the Golden Gate Bridge were 50 cents.
** We had rotary telephones.
** There were three men who washed your windows, checked your oil and filled up your car for you at a gas station.
** Gas was 19 cents a gallon.
** I sold girl scout cookies for 50 cents a box.
** A and W had fast food restaurants and their employees came to your car to take your order on roller skates.
** There were blue chip and S and H green stamps that you could trade in for merchandise; like a set of 8 steak knives.
** A Volkswagen Beetle cost $1299.
** There was segregation and how much I used to upset the adults by not knowing it existed.
** If you hitch hiked how people gladly gave you a ride to where you were going.
** You could get a Flings burgers.
** McDonald’s hamburgers were 12 cents each.
** Wine was Gallo, Italian Swiss Colony, Charles Krug, Almaden, and Thunderbird.
** Kids were banned from buying bananas in the grocery store because it was believed that they smoked the peels to get high.
** The King Family was a variety show. So was The Carol Burnett Show.
** Totie Fields was a female comedy genius.
** The popular saying of the day was “To the moon Alice!”
** There was The Lucky Strike Hip Parade.
** You were rich when the tooth fairy left you a nickel.
** Television was black and white and there were no remote controls.
** Uncle Milty was the top TV show.
** People knew how to count back change.
** Soda came in glass bottles.
** The first transistor radio was AM only.
** Records were 33, 45 and 78.
** US Mail was delivered Monday through Fridays twice a day, and once on Saturday.
** You went out to dinner you had to dress up. You had to wear a suit or your Mary Janes and White Gloves. It was the same if you wanted to go into San Francisco on the train.
** If you misbehaved in a restaurant you would be sent to the car to wait for everyone else to finish their dinner before going home.
** You got spanked and did not become a serial killer.
** You bought a car and could get a two tone paint job.
** There was only one phone company and it was AT&T and you never had any trouble with your phone.
** Exxon was called Esso.
** Chevron was called Standard Oil Company, or the Standard Station.
** The first man stepped on the moon.
** The San Francisco 49er’s played in Kezar Stadium and you got splinters in your butt sitting on the benches.
** I used to watch the San Francisco Giants play ball with players Willie Mays, Roger Maris, Bobbie Richardson, Felipe, Matty and Jesus Alou, Willie McCovey, Gaylord Perry, Juan Marichal, Bobbie Bonds and Roberto Clemente.
** Joe Namath wore panty hose.
** Tiny Tim was popular, and Twiggie was the top model.
** Jets replaced propeller planes and railroad steam engines ceased being used.
** Hawaii and Alaska were just territories.
** Melmac was the popular dishware of the day because you could not break it.
** Dr.’s actually made house calls.
** The first outer space TV show was Captain Video.
** The first remote control TV was a Zenith.
** You became a woman when you were told you could wear high heel shoes and lipstick.
** You could buy a watermelon with seeds for 15 cents.
** Bread, fish and produce trucks drove by your house.
** Refrigerators had a freezer that would form a glacier.
** Soap Operas had a show called “Dark Shadows” featuring Vampire Barnabas Collins.
