With the kitchen cleaned up and evidence of foul play removed from the house, no one would know what I did last night. Poor Jeffrey had no idea what was coming when he came over for dinner.

Jeffrey, my older brother was a snot to say the least. He had been rude and condescending to me since we were kids. I gave him a good dose of woman’s bane in his dessert. He left a while later telling me he was not feeling good.

The phone rings. It’s my sister. “Jeffrey is dead.”

“No!” I exclaimed. “What happened?” I smiled.

Working feverishly on a project my boss gave me, I had to pay attention to detail.

“What are you doing that for?” asked my type “A” personality boss.

“It needs to be done in order for this to be right,” I replied.

“What is that envelope doing in the garbage? You can use that to write notes on.”

“Now how did that get in there?” I smiled. Little did she know I found the 1955 calendar in the desk. Paper from 60 years ago!

I felt chained to my desk. It is time to look for a new job.

Memorialized - Photo by Douglas M MacIlroy

Memorialized – Photo by Douglas M MacIlroy

He had found a rift in the time continuum, which allowed him to travel back through history. Dressed in scuba gear, he jumped through the rift.

Light as a feather, he found himself floating in the sea. Whooshing towards him was a huge creature. It slowed as it got near. John was dog paddling. The Plesiosauria leaned forward as if smelling him. He reached out his hand. The nose of the creature touched his hand. He stroked her face. What a thrill!

When John came back to the present day, he created a sculpture to memorialize his unique encounter.

With water at a premium, they did all that they could to capture every bit they could. Today they went into the forest.

“Mom, look at what I found!” exclaimed Sheila.

Heading over to the shrub, her mother bent down to take a look. There were leaves covered with drops of precious water. “Wonderful!” her mother said.

For years now, with the drought ongoing in California, the people did what they could to get water. Big companies had drained the State of water all for the mighty dollar.

Sheila gently grabbed the leaf. Sadly, it was just a drop in the bucket.

“Mom,” said Haley. “My cell phone is not getting a signal!”

Ignoring her daughter, she remembered Grandpa Jenkins. “See that tower? There used to be barns around it for the dairy cattle. One day, while Grandpa was milking the cows, a bright light from the sky illuminated the building and in a flash, it was gone. We never saw Grandpa again. That silo is all that is left.”

Grandpa Jenkins’ cows stood in a hold on the Starship. He was teaching the Greys how to milk the cows.  In his mind, he heard them shout, “Milk!”

Water - Photo by Madison WoodsI sat at the table tapping on my computer. Stopping I kept asking myself, “What do I do with this photo to make a story?”

“The drought was in its fourth year.”

Nope. I don’t like that one. Tap, tap, tap on the backspace key.

“Her throat was dry and parched.”

“Come on now,” I thought. Dry and parched? I erase that one too. The photo has a container with a water spigot, and some unidentifiable creature underneath. Come on brain. Think of something!

“It looked like an ordinary spigot. It wasn’t. We watched as it opened on its own.”

When I saw the photo for this week’s Friday Fictioneers, I knew what my story would be. So, here is my story entitled, “The Day My World Disappeared.”

Visiting Barcelona - Photo by Dee Lovering

I was at the Port of Barcelona in Spain. I visited the craft show that day, looking forward to viewing art. Stopping to admire an artist’s lovely carvings, I noticed this man in dark glasses standing next to me. He was looking at me from the corner of his eye. Strange…

I swiftly walked away. Stopping at another artist’s tent, I noticed he was near me again. Turning to leave, I saw him leave too. Running, I suddenly felt a hand grip my shoulder. As I turned, a stinky rag covered my nose; that was the day my world disappeared.

It is time once again for a story to be told for the Friday Fictioneers flash fiction challenge! The rules indicate that you write a complete story using 100 words or less. Your story must go along with the subject in the photo prompt provided. Here is the photo and my story entitled “An Unlikely Observation.”

Observed - Photo by Douglas M. MacIlroy

Observed – Photo by Douglas M. MacIlroy

It was a clear night, the air was crisp, and the stars twinkled. Each astronomer had their scopes focused on a new nebula forming in the Trimidean sector of Orion. All at once, each astronomer heard a buzzing sound. In a flash, they were in a room with grey creatures eating pizza, drinking wine and listening to music.

The greys raised their glasses to the astronomers. Just as quickly as they arrived, they were back on the ground on the road that led to the observatories. They looked at one another. No one would believe what each had just observed!

Fire! – Photo by Roger Bultot

A three-alarm fire broke out at 656 Elm Avenue this morning. Fire fighters responded to the call. The fire began on the second floor in the back of the building. Residents of the multi-family home got out safely.

One resident said that he heard what sounded like an explosion, which woke him up. He smelled the smoke, and was able to get his elderly mother, the dog and the cat out before the floor became engulfed in flames.

In the meantime, a local beat cop cited the fire engine for illegally parking on the street during street sweeping hours.

Her mother pestered her for years calling her an old maid. Of the men she dated, the first question her mom asked was what kind of car they drove. Money, possessions and appearances meant everything to her Mom.

She said to her Mom, “Here are my options. Date a man who drives: A Porsche and lives in it; a Camry, lives in a lavish house, and is broke; a 1963 VW Bug, lives in a studio apartment, and is financially sound. You can’t judge a book by its cover Mom. When I get hitched Mom, it will be for love.”
