You might remember a past post called “Room with a Deer View…” That article can be found at:
This morning when my husband asked what the plan was for the day, I asked him if we could take the ride to the Deer View. Before heading out I grabbed my camera and a couple of bottles of water. Now off we go!
The distance to where we are heading is not all that far, but we knew it would take a while. At the entrance to El Dorado National Forest the road changes from pavement to dirt. The higher up we go we notice the forest changing with less shrubbery. We finally come upon the cut off that will take us to The Hotel Bret Harte at Deer View! It is here that the road really changes. We are now traveling on a narrow road where we are having to stop the car to move debris off the road, or to break branches so we do not scratch the car. To give you an idea of what the road is like, I ask my husband to stop the car for a photo. Here we are!
As we travel further down the road it gets a lot more treacherous. The road is not maintained and the rain over the years has caused huge dips in the road. We have to go very slow so that we do not bottom out the Jeep.
This rut in the road is between 12-18″ deep.
We finally come to a point and we can drive no further. There is a stream bed that runs over the road. We grab everything so that we can hike the rest of the way in. We first have to go across the stream. Footing is slippery and the mud looks pretty deep. We head up from the stream and find ourselves in a clearing. There are no markers and we have no map. We head up a dirt road. Finding ourselves out of breath and having gone up quite a bit, we turn around and start to head back down. We end up in the clearing again. We decide to head to the right to see where that takes us. We can hear the bells on the cows as they wander the area, their evidence is all around us. A few more feet takes us to a spot where we find an entrance to the area where the hotel stood!
At this point I have to mention how dark the forest is. Now that we have found the place, here are some old photos of what it used to look like, followed by an artists rendering…
As we head on into the area it is dark and it we find the foundation which is all that remains of the building. Here are some of the photos that I shot.
Right now I am actually inside the hotel. Now leaving the remains of the hotel, we start to head towards where the lodge building was.Looking around me I spot stairs. The forest has been reclaiming the area over the last 80 years. We cannot make it to where the lodge is due to the overgrowth of the forest. I head back. Then I find what was the base of the center chimney to the hotel. We leave the area, and looking back, here is a shot of how well concealed this place is.We are now heading back to the car. And this is a shot of the trail that we are on.Due to the mud and slickness of the rocks, we have to use a downed branch to navigate the stream crossing. The branch sinks in about a foot into the mud.We make it back to the car and head for home. One thing that saddened me on this trip was seeing the remains of folks having had a paintball war in the area. Not only did they leave empty cans and beer bottles, but they also left the paint ball shells everywhere. There was also a burnt out barbeque. We go by the motto “If you bring it in, you take it out.” It is sad that others do not do the same.
I hope that you enjoyed the day with us! If you want to make the journey, then please take a look at the topo map in the “Room with a Deer View” link located at the top of this post.
Now go and have a great Sunday!
