Each week, Rochelle Wisoff-Fields hosts a writing challenge called Friday Fictioneers! This writing challenge asks for a story using 100 words or less that goes with the photo prompt. Here is my tale with today’s photo provided by Erin Leary.
“Now class, let’s see what each of you came up with on your mushroom hunt,” said the teacher. “Betsy, let’s see what you found.”
Betsy came forward holding a plastic bag. The class, eager to learn about mushrooms, gathered around.
“Ah,” said the teacher. “These are Liberty Caps, also known as Psilocybe semilanceata. This mushroom is hallucinogenic. These are mature when the cap is flat. In the early stages of formation, the cap is bell shaped with a nipple, or umbo, on top. Some refer to these as Boobies. Betsy, where did you find these?”
Betsy replied, “In the boobie hatch.”

Thank you to Rochelle for hosting this challenge and to Erin for the photo that inspired this story! And to you dear reader, thank you for taking the time to stop by today for a quickie read! Have a terrific Thursday and be well! ^..^
fun tale,
from one boob to …?
another?…. ๐
Ha.. yes when you know where boobies hatch you know the catch of being nuts…
LOL! ๐
I feel stupid – what is a boobie hatch? Great story I just didn’t understand the ending.
Definition of BOOBIE HATCH: 1: a raised framework with a sliding cover over a small hatch on a ship; 2: a psychiatric hospital.
Haha! I like the second definition the best. ๐ Thank you Barb!
YW!
These are mature as the cap is flat – wondering if a change to “These are mature when the cap is flat” would make this read a little easier. You decide.
Wonderful little story about possibly learning a bit more about mushrooms than is wise? Who knows what this class will do with the information.
Thank you for the correction Alicia. Sometimes I do not see things like this due to chemo brain! Be well!
I often do this sort of thing and I have no excuse. Am always glad when someone points out stuff like this to me. No worries.
Thanks again!
Boobie hatch got me. My two year old son seems to focus on that word “boobie” quite a bit!
๐ They do that at the age of two and it continues on for quite a while!
I remember mushrooms like those in Amsterdam! At least, I think I remember!
๐
Dear Barb,
Sometimes I think of our Friday Fictioneers in those terms.
Shalom,
Rochelle
From the boobie hatch? ๐ Thanks Rochelle for the comment, and for hosting the challenge!
Dear Babso,
And here we are.
Good story.
Aloha,
Doug
Aloha Doug! We are here indeed! I am glad that you enjoyed my bit of flash!
Aha! Quite a prize-catch! she knew exactly where to find them ๐
Someone’s hard-work & fruits of labour in her bag!
I have a similar take ๐
I will have to check that out Anita!
Don’t ask me why, but I love the term booby hatch…I remember doing mushrooms when the world turned to Technicolor…like when Dorothy lands in Oz. Love how great an essay can turn out with so few words ๐
Thanks Susannah! This was a challenge keeping it under 100! ๐
Funny story! I hope they don’t eat these ๐
That would be another chapter… Glad you enjoyed the story Jan!
Hmm, boobie hatch. Did you mean boobie patch? Do they start out with little training bras? I’ve always wondered about that. What happens to a boobie that hasn’t been properly trained?
It could have been a patch of boobies. Looking further into what the teacher indicated, I find that these mushrooms never get big enough, or full enough to require training bras. The boobie that has not been properly trained can open too soon, releasing little boobie spoors that are not fully developed. ๐
If these were older kids, I’m sure at this point some of the mushrooms would “mysteriously” disappear, to be sampled later ๐
They might indeed!
