I am taking part in Mondays Finish the Story, which is a flash fiction challenge that provides a photo prompt and the opening sentence to a story. The rules indicate that the story you come up with must be between 100-150 words, not including the opening line⦠Are you ready for my story?
“Little did they know when the photographer took their picture that they would find themselves trapped in a painting.” The photographer chuckled to herself, smiling as she walked away from the waterfront.
After snapping a couple more photos, she returned the art gallery. Walking into the back room, she hooked up the camera to the synthesizer. Turning it on it began to whir, pop and snap. Heading over to the printer, she watched as the painting emerged.
With everything framed and hung, she was ready for opening night. At six o’clock, she opened the doors. The art community gathered in her gallery, sipping wine and admiring each piece. All was going well.
A man who was admiring the painting of the musicians approached her. Reaching inside his jacket, he pulled out a wallet and flashed his badge. “My name is Detective Schmidt from the New Orleans PD. Can I ask you some questions about your paintings? You see, what I find very odd, is that the people in each of your paintings are folks who have been reported missing.”

Ooooh! I loved this! It reminds me of some movies I watched as a child like Back to the Future or Honey, Who Shrunk the Kids where there were wacky sci-fi gadgets which did strange stuff!
π I had a lot of fun writing this one. It was hard to keep it within the word limit! Thanks Frederick!
Nice twist.
I’m late to the party… but I played… listen…
π
Thanks.
Thank you Jules! The challenge runs from Monday to Sunday… π
Wow! Super story! i have goosebumps! π
though there’s hardly much in common, your story reminded me of the movie- ‘The Sixth Sense’.
My story for the challenge features a Detective too π π
Thank you Anita! This was fun to write! π
Doh! That’ll put a damper on the evening. Still, it’ll be hard to prove she whisked them out of reality. She’ll probably get away with it. Great story. I love the idea.
Thank you Eric!
Oooh, it’s very X-Files, isn’t it? I’d love to find out if Detective Schmidt knows what he’s gotten himself into…
Who knows when and where the detective will re-emerge!

Thank you for the story! Can you please change the link so that it goes to the Monday’s blog instead of this one? I am giving you the link to copy and paste into your post:

Thanks! π
Great story. I wrote mine before I read yours. We seem to both come up with something from the dark side.
I think the detective should take her picture, and put the painting up on the wall. Then he quits the force, and becomes a photographer.
Thank you! He actually takes the camera and uses it to capture criminals! π
Nice ending. It would be a great way to do it, and he could have an art show later when the criminals are in prison.
π Thanks!
Excellent! I enjoyed the ending of this. Good job on your story.
Thank you Joy! I thought tossing a detective in there would make it fun!
Yes! It did!
π
Oh oh – I think she might be in trouble! I wonder whether the detective has any inkling as to what’s actually going on, though. He’d have to be very open minded to even consider the missing people being trapped inside the paintings!
She might be! If he can figure out how it all works! Maybe he might want the camera for capturing criminals!
Elegantly simple.
Thank you YS! π
Ha, rumbled! I wonder if she has any way of getting them back out again? I reckon not.
You reckon correctly! π
I enjoyed the story, Barb. I’m afraid she’s going to have trouble answering that question. Well done. π — Suzanne
Thank you Suzanne! I had a lot of iterations before whittling it down to what I wanted. π
Tell this isn’t autobiographical, please π Great story.
I plead the 5th amendment! π Thanks for the comment and be well… ^..^
π
WHOA! Would love to see where this story goes; just awesome!
Thank you Kadence! Maybe later on I can weave more of this!
Brilliant! A mystery that will be certainly unsolved until paintings can talk back ~
Thank you John! π
Very creepy, but very imaginative! I’m hooked
Well done!
I did my job if you thought this was creepy Francesca! Thank you for your comment, and I loved your story too! Be well… ^..^
I think there are serious questions to be answered.
Great take Barb, enjoyed it.
And, those questions would be…. π Thank you Michael! I had a hard time keeping this one within the word limit!! Suggestions for next week? What kind of photo would you like to see?
Anything historical?
I do have photos of Fort Apache…photos of old buildings in Skagway, one made entirely of driftwood…a photo of a place where Mark Twain once lived…old buggy photos…
Any of those sound good Barb, the photos you post all seem to have number of dimensions to them.
Thanks for the help Michael! I will be getting the next Mondays together today! π
I would love to know more about this evil photographer. Great idea!
You do have to wonder what the response was to the detective don’t you? I could see her face flushing…No! Maybe she puts on her poker face? Thank you for liking this post and for your comment too! Hugs to you Emily… π
Scary! I watched “The black list” last night. There are always people missing or dead! I also wonder if the mystery is going to be solved
It might be, or maybe she takes a photo of the detective! π
Mmmm could also work
π
A detective story…gotta love it. π
Thanks Susan!
Creepy, creepy, creepy. π
π Glad you found it that way…did my job! π
Wow!! Great story.
Thank you Tena! It was fun to write!
Ah, love this! I cannot help but wonder how the detective is going to free these people.
Maybe I should save this for another story! π Ah, we will have to wait and see!
I think you should π
How about this Colline…The detective has his photo taken, and he too now hangs on the wall of fame…..
Shades of the Twilight Zone! Rod Serling would be proud!
Shades indeed! π
