I am taking part in Mondays Finish the Story, which is a flash fiction challenge that provides a photo prompt and the opening sentence to your story. The rules indicate that the story you come up with must be between 100-150 words, not including the opening line… Are you ready for my story?
“She was unaware that she was being watched.” She did not have that sixth sense like others in her family. Wandering through the woods, she searched for herbs to use in her soaps.
She heard branches snapping behind her. Turning to look, she saw nothing. Clara returned to her task. Coming across a patch of woodruff, she began harvesting, taking care not to injure the plant, and leaving enough remaining for a later harvest. Noting the position of the sun on its decline, she turned to head back home. A breeze was just kicking up and dead leaves floated downwards around her.
The snapping of branches caught her attention once again. Startled, she spied a grey wolf with gold eyes. It ran towards her swiftly. At the last moment the wolf sat. As she reached out her hand, the wolf licked her fingers. She might not have a sixth sense, but she did have a way with animals!

Phew! It sounds like she’s very “woodsy” – careful with the plants and good with animals. Nice story 🙂
Thank you!
A super story 🙂
Many thanks Aileen!
Great ending…another friendly wolf.
Thank you Susan! Yes, another friendly wolf! 🙂
Lovely story Barb, I took a similar path, so to speak….
Thank you! 🙂
Excellent! However – one must ask – was she wearing a red hood?
Really? What do you think PJ? Leaving that up to your imagination!
Nice descriptive piece.
If I may make a minor crit: This sentence “Reaching out her hand the wolf licked her fingers.” contains a dangling modifier. The phrase “reaching out her hand” is a modifier that refers to the noun wolf and I’m pretty sure you mean the girl. So it should read something like the following: She reached out her hand and the wolf licked her fingers OR As she reached out her hand, the wolf licked her fingers.
Otherwise, you give great imagery. Well done!
Thank you Caerlynn. I made the change! Thank you for the correction and for the compliment about my bit of flash! I am no expert, but I certainly am enjoying the flash fiction challenges! Be well! ^..^
