We have been here in our little spot of the Sierra Foothills for 8 years now, and we have rarely seen snakes. I remember seeing a king snake on a drive home and that has been about it. Until recently that is! I would like to suggest that you click on the photos to enlarge them so that you can really check out the amazing details! Once the photo is enlarged, if you click it again the photo will fill your screen!
While sitting on our deck having our evening cocktails, I could have sworn that I saw two birds, one dark and one light, fly right under the deck. I actually got up and went to the side to look but found nothing. I sat back down and a minute later my husband is shouting, “Snake! Snake!” Luckily I had my camera with me!
The visiting snake was quick and on the move! It was a King Snake! Running quickly, I had to get to where the snake was heading, which was right into the vinca. Here are the shots I got of this lovely and beneficial snake.
He was moving pretty quickly and I did manage to catch one more shot.
I did get a bit of video so you can see this guy on the move. He is truly a beauty!
A couple of days later, when I took the dog outside to do his business, I noticed he was smelling something that did not look right on our gravel driveway. I then realized what he had his nose to was a snake! And, I panicked! Why? Because Rattlesnakes are common here! After shooing the dog away from the snake, I put him back in the house and grabbed my camera.
On venturing back out, I realized that the snake had not moved. The snake: A Gopher Snake. The other thing of note is that on this particular day we were visited by not only this gopher snake in the morning, but another one in the afternoon! So this next series of shots is the first snake. It measured about five feet in length!
Here you can see the length of the snake.
This next series of shots has a bit more lighting as these were taken of the second snake in the later afternoon. This one measured about four feet in length and was a bit more active than the first!
What an exciting series of days! In all of the years of living here, these are the first snake visitors that we have seen. Just like the turkey that showed up! Speaking of which, two female turkies have been visiting us regularly with 9 babies. So stay tuned for a post on those lovely foothills critters!
Thank you for taking the time to stop by! I hope that you have enjoyed this post! Have an amazing Tuesday, and be well! ^..^
