The fortress was built hundreds of years ago. It served as the gateway to the southern coastal town of Antibes. Today, this is where cruise ships come in to port and where a fleet of rescue boats and helicopters reside. It is a town with a hidden history.
It was back in the 1400’s that the French and English ruling families were at odds. Both sides had contacted the Pope in order to act as a arbitrator for the two sides. He agreed, and they were to meet in the coastal town of Antibes.
All parties arrived by ship. Wearing their best gowns and jewels, the women made their way to the gangplanks as did the men in all their finery. The Pope was waiting on shore. As the royalty from both ships made their way across, the weight of their outfits and jewels was more than the gangplanks could handle and simultaneously a large cracking sound was heard. All the gangplanks gave way dropping the royalty in the drink where they had to be fished out. Luckily no one died.
This is the hidden history of the small town of Antibes!
