It was one of the last remaining lookouts, one abandoned at the end of World War II. “This lookout was used to watch for German U-Boats,” explained the docent. “Now you might notice that the device houses a telescope and on the table a map.”
“You will notice that towards the bottom of the map is the shoreline, which is now barely visible due to the growth of the trees out the window. The men who manned this building would mark and report sightings of any vessel out on the Atlantic.”
Behind the group stood Colonel Willingham. He listened in as the docent explained how the lookout was used. He moved through the group of tourists, several of which felt a sudden chill. As the docent moved on the describe the use of the other telescope, the Colonel added lines to the map on the table.
“What is important to note,” said the docent, “is that every morning we change out the map, placing a new one on the table. By the end of the day the map is filled in as it was on the last day of the war.”
Colonel Willingham smiled. They knew that he was there!

The Colonel definitely likes to be appreciated! Thank you Joe for your comment and Happy New Year!
Great short story to accompany the photo. I’m sure spirits, such as the colonel, will always be in places such as this.
