Spider webs are pretty amazing structures. So are the spiders too! A lot of folks are afraid of these little critters, but they do help us out! They eat other bugs, such as those pesky flies, and benefit us by doing so. At the winery I have two spiders in my window which I leave alone as they minimize the number of fruit flies in my office. I thought that today I would share these two spiders with you and let you in on something that I discovered about these spiders!
Here is a Daddy Long Legs that is in the corner of the window sill in my office.
This is one of the most poisonous of spiders. Their structure however does not lend to them lowering themselves to bite you! It was with this spider that I made a discovery about spiders: They shed their skins and legs much like a snake or lizard! On my windowsill in the web hangs the remains of a sloughed off body! The other spider on my sill is a totally different spider than the Daddy Long Legs. I am not sure of the name of this one, but here is a photo of this little missy with her sloughed off body on the right.
We leave the webs on our front deck where we have our evening cocktail so that they can trap those pesky flies! I was amazed at the structures of these webs. Here is a shot of one web that actually has a tube rising up from the base!
Around the base it resembles a bowl.
Amazing structures and a beneficial insect!
Thank you for the visit today, and have a splendid Saturday!

What is this “most poisonous of spiders” in your second photo? Do they show up in houses? Should I be on the lookout for him? I have mixed feelings about spiders. Most of the time, when I find them in my house, I trap them in a jar and escort them outside, because I know they’re good creatures. But I’ve also gotten a couple of spider bites at night that leave me feeling a little resentful of the tiny beasts! 🙂
The second one is not poisonous. I think this was a wolf spider, but not sure. She does not show much of herself…

Thank you for the reblog!
They are amazing creatures, yet they still seem “creepy”. And as you noted they are beneficial insects, unlike pesky mosquitoes or flies, which are only good for feeding to other creatures. Nice photos, thanks for sharing.
