When we went to the San Diego Zoo with fellow blogger Russel Ray, I just had to see my most favorite animals in the world: The Elephants! Silent in their communications with each other, they hold a quiet grace. For as large as they are, for me there is something peaceful and comforting being in their presence.
Since my last visit to the San Diego Zoo more than 30 years ago, their enclosure has changed. It is much larger, and includes an area for their personal maintenance. Last time I visited, the African and Asian Elephants had different enclosures, but on this trip to the zoo they are now residing together!
When they stand side by side you can see many differences, with the ears being the most notable.
One of these lovely creatures was by the grooming area, scratching and rubbing against the posts. Little did we know she was thinking of a lovely dust bath!
Wash the right…
…then the left!
One thing that is apparent with these creatures is that wrinkles are definitely in!
There is a beauty in their lovely faces.
Now ladies, don’t you wish you had lashes like these? Very alluring!
One of these lovelies decided it was time for lunch!
And after lunch a trip to the watering hole was necessary!
Let’s complete this visit with a photo of one truly lovely lady!
Well, thanks for the visit today! I hope that you enjoyed the photos! Now go and have a great Tuesday!
Would you believe here I am a senior senior citizen and I visited my first zoo last year in Jacksonville, FL! I did NOT like it! So disappointing…guess I just don’t like to see the animals caged like these were and the areas of confinement are so small.
Your photos are GREAT, however! Another photographer that takes awesome photos is Bob Mielke, Northwest Photographer. If you have not visited his site, I highly recomment it. http://pacificnorthwesttravelerdotcom.wordpress.com/2012/09/08/laughing-at-the-zoo-animals/
No I would not believe that Sharla! I definitely recommend going to the San Diego Zoo. The enclosures for many of the animals are good size. I also recommend the movie about an amazing family who bought a zoo. Here is a link to the story of the family…
We Bought a Zoo! The movie starring Matt Damon and Scarlett Johannson moved me!
And, thank you for pointing me towards Bob and the Cookie! Love them both!
Hugs – Barb
Thanks, Barb. Not sure I will ever get out to the West coast. I am in Georgia. Of course, never say never! Thought you would like the sites! 🙂
Wonderful! And thank you!
i miss Africa! thanks for sharing these beautiful photos!
Great shots Barb. 🙂
Thank you LuAnn! What is your favorite animal?
You know, I don’t know if I have a favorite Barb. I’m fascinated by so many. I will have to give that some thought.
G’day! I LOVE going to the zoo too!
You got some REMARKABLE photo moments that brightened my day too! Thank you!
Glad that you enjoyed them and that I brightened your day Joanne!
Another wonderful posts. Elephants are amazing, and there is so much we don’t know about them. I suspect they are a lot more intelligent than many give them credit. Amazing shots!
Many thanks! Most animals are a lot more intelligent than we give them credit for! Glad that you liked my post!
Nice group of photos. Elephants are fascinating creatures. The elephant maintenance pens at the San Diego zoo reminded me of something from the movie ‘Jurassic Park’. – but then a male African can weigh up to 15,000 pounds. They also use seismic communication to communicate. Thanks for the share.
Beautiful. Elephants do not communicate silently. They can produce very low sounds that are out of our hearing range.
Thank you Rosemarie! Yes, we cannot hear them so for us it is silent…Wouldn’t you just love to know what they are saying?
