Even though the summer season has passed, there are still green plants growing in the vegetable garden. Yesterday was a day spent of getting rid of the dried corn stalks, and pulling up plants that will no longer produce. There was a lot of weeding too as I was putting in cauliflower and brussel sprouts. The broccoli just needed to be trimmed back. And, there were so many green tomatoes that I picked a huge bag, mostly green but not all! Here is what I brought in…
So, what does someone do with all these tomatoes, you ask?
Well the larger of the tomatoes will be ripened on the counter with an apple to aid the process. To see what happens with the rest of these tomatoes, well, you will just have to stay tuned! I will be featuring a post using these green tomatoes this coming weekend!

I picked green tomatoes today….and made my first fried green tomatoes. Just a sprinkle of red pepper and salt, then topped with parmesan. Nice as a side dish, but nothing to write home about. I am proud not to waste my lovely veggies though!
Try dipping the slices of green tomatoes in flour seasoned with a bit of salt and pepper, and use the red pepper too. Then fry them in a bit of butter until they are crispy and browned. My mother-in-law told me that this was how her husband loved them.
I believe it was in Menard’s garden area. Some were unmarked which is why they were so cheap!
Lucky find for you Marcella!
Man, you had a windfall! I’ve still got some green ones and I keep them in a bowl on my kitchen table along with other fruit like a bosc pear and an avocado. Whatever needs to be ripened. They help ripen each other ; – ) and they are out of my way. I saved some seeds from the cherry tomatoes. I have to remember to save some seeds from the bigger cherry tomato or the mystery tomato plant as I sometimes call it because I have no idea what tomato variety it is! I bought 5 plants for $.75! I never expected to get such a bargain!
This is more than what I got off the plants when they should have been producing and ripening. Giving up on heirlooms. With the rain expected this week, if I did not pick these they would have all rotted. You got quite a deal! Where did you pick up your tomatoes?
good grief charlie brown. you do have green tomatoes do you have any ham?
Yes, and green eggs too!
I see fried green tomatoes in your future. Using an apple to hasten the ripening is a handy tip I will remember.
Apples give off a gas that hastens ripening. No fried green tomatoes, something else entirely!
What a bounty.
