I recently read a post from a fellow WP blogger that indicated that the recipe used a “French Onion.” I asked the question of the writer what is the difference. The writer indicated that they did not know. So I had to look this up!
In looking this item up, I found that the only reference to “French Onion” was in relation to a soup called “French Onion Soup.” While onion soup has been around since Roman times, it was in the 18th century that a soup made of onions, beef broth, cheese and a slab of bread came to be. Caramelizing the onions is what gives this soup its distinct flavor!
So, our plain Jane onions, are just that: Onions. At least this mystery has been solved!

Man oh man i love me some french onion soup! Last time I made it 10 years or more ago I think I used Julia Child’s recipe in her huge “The Way to Cook” book. mmmmmmmmm fond memories-must make some!
Oui, oui!
The best French-onion soup I’ve ever had was at one of the oldest haciendas in Ecuador’s Andes. The dining room that night was chilly, and that steaming bowl of hot soup with melted cheese and croutons comforted my senses! A bowl right now might ease this cough. I wonder if they have home delivery? (I’m about eight hours away!) Z
