An unusual title for a post, don’t you think? Today I am again featuring those little Anna Hummingbirds that are gracing our garden. Watching them is like watching a dance! They zoom in and out, and spiral around so quickly so that when I can get a good photo, I am very pleased.
A little something on the Anna’s…They are very common in the area where we live. They are no bigger than a ping pong ball and weigh about as much as the U.S. nickel. The males have an iridescent red crown while the females have a green crown.
During breeding the males will zoom high up in the air above the female and then dive down over her at a speed of 27 m.p.s. creating a unique sound with his tail feathers. After mating, the female lays her eggs and tends to them all by herself.
As the babies develop they too have the green crown like the female, and this changes on the males as they reach adulthood.
If you want to attract hummingbirds to your yard, they love the color red! To make a nectar for them mix 1 cup of sugar to 4 cups of water and add a bit of red food dye. Do not use an artificial sweetener!
Once they come to your yard to visit your feeder, be prepared to add to it frequently! This year we are being visited by approximately 15 birds, and we are adding to their feeders every day!I hope that you enjoy these little birds as much as I do. Future plans include videotaping them for you so that you can hear the unique sounds of these birds in motion!

Sweet! U got 3 in that one shot – last year i was watching the Decorah eagles hatch and somewhere on that site they had a hummingbird nest where you could watch them hatch and grow–it was great! haven’t checked it out this year but need to.
Good photos as I know it can be difficult to get a clear picture due to their rapid zooming around.
aww look at them, love those hummingbirds, it makes my day 😀 please do videotape them, love this post! 🙂
Thank you Orbital! Glad that I was able to make your day!
