Take a trip back in time with me to the historic town of Jerome, AZ, located on the side of Cleopatra Hill. The town came into being in 1883, and was incorporated in 1889. The area was known in Spanish colonial times to have deposits of silver and copper. Located above the Verde Valley, the town is named after a New York investor named Eugene Murray Jerome.
In the boom town days this town boasted a population of 2,500, and today it is a quiet little place that has a population of around 350. Although not all of the population can be seen. Visit the Jerome Grand Hotel to experience this for yourself!
Standing on the streets of Jerome, you look out over the Verde Valley and in the distance you can see the red rocks of Sedona. Signs of the past are everywhere you look. At one end of town you will find the Ghost Town open.Remnants of the old copper mining can be found. And look at the view into the remains of the Ghost Town’s Dr.’s office.Old vehicles can be found in the ghost town too.Take a trip there for yourself. Eat at the Mile High Grill for the best fries in town! I hope that you enjoy the town as much as my husband and I did!
Been to Jerome. One can spend a full day there wandering through the shops, the ghost town, and museum. And what a view of the Red Rocks of Sedona off in the near distance. It’s a fun trip. (For those that haven’t seen the mountains at Sedona it is WELL worth going. A rainbow in rock!)
Lots of history in this area as well – from Tuzigoot National Monument, Sedona, Oak Creek, Montezuma’s Castle, Montezuma’s Well, the Verde Valley, Prescott, and more. All within a relatively short distance to one another.
Arizona is one pretty State to visit, so go and see it soon.
