January here in the Foothills in the time that we have been here has either been warm or very cold. This year it is very cold! This morning the temperature was in the low 20′s and the high today 39. The other day when I photographed the ice crystals, I also photographed the water in one of our bird baths. What was amazing to me was that the surface was not a smooth sheet of ice, but higher in some spots and lower in others. And there was a perfect 3 sided pyramid!
So let’s check out this pyramid, shall we?
Amazing isn’t it? You can see the apex, and if you look closely you will see the line coming down from the top towards the bottom of this photo! Chilling isn’t it?This next photo allows you to see the bubbles being frozen as they drift to the surface, and the ones that reached the surface are frozen into patterns.
This reminds me a bit of that wine that bubbles! Here is another shot of the pyramid, but I want to ask you to look at something in particular in this photo. The air bubbles floating to the apex are going up straight. The bubbles raising on the left and the right are traveling left and right!
Really cool – huh?One last shot of some really amazing air bubbles – OK? OK!
Monday is here…and may this be a wonderful start of the work week for you and thanks for stopping by! See you tomorrow!

I see a post in your future on mud!
now that comment made me chuckle outloud! great suggestion! z
Yeah baby, it is cold outside. Here it is 14. The photos are great. Poor birds cannot get a drink.
Poor birds! They make up for it in the moisture in the bugs they eat!
Interesting photos – keep that camera warm! Thanks for sharing.
